Tips for choosing and employing Animation-

When and where to use character animation:

There are several mediums that might employ character animation successfully, and just as many that don't. For instance, while you probably wouldn't put an animated cartoon character into a sales presentation, an interactive science presentation might be perfect for an animated host or sidekick, especially if it is going to have a younger audience.

All entertainment media- including games, cartoons and postcards are ideal candidates for employing animated characters.

Presentations- most presentations may not fit the bill for character animation, but if the presentation is geared towards children or families, you may find that it works perfectly.

Splash pages and advertisements- if you have a company mascot, a good place to bring him to life on your website may be in an opening splash movie or flash advertisements.

Types of animation:

There are several types of character animation; Full, Limited, and 3D are considered here.

Full animation- is the cream of the crop of hand drawn animation. This is the Disney movie standard, where every frame is drawn out completely. This is always very costly and time-consuming, but yields the best overall results.

Limited animation- is a much less expensive, but also less lively form of animation. This is the Hanna-Barbera standard, where mouths, eyes, limbs and other moving parts are drawn separately from the main body.

3D animation- comes in a variety of flavors, and depending on detail, style, liveliness of the animation, and other factors, can run the gamut on time and production costs. It can be much cheaper than limited animation, or more expensive than full. Initial roll out in 3-D animation is generally much higher than subsequent projects, depending on how many elements (characters, environments, props, etc.) can be re-purposed from earlier productions.
